How can regular activity support stronger mental health, confidence and connection in Huddersfield?
At New Direction Services CIC, we believe that movement should be welcoming, practical and available to people from all walks of life. Our community activities support people across Huddersfield, Kirklees and West Yorkshire to become more active, learn crucial skills and take a positive new direction.
This includes fitness classes, women’s activities, self-defence workshops, support after domestic violence, holiday clubs and flexible community access.
Step 1: Start with mental health and activity
Physical activity is not a complete answer to every mental health challenge. However, it can be an important part of a wider support plan.
A short walk, a friendly class or a few minutes of movement can help create structure in the week. Activity can also support sleep, confidence and social connection. For some people, joining a group provides a safe reason to leave the house and meet others.
The most important step is to start at a level that feels manageable.
You do not need to be highly fit. You do not need previous experience. You do not need to compare yourself with anyone else. Our sessions are designed to help people build strength gradually, learn new skills and feel more comfortable taking part.

Step 2: Choose activity that builds confidence
Fitness is about more than physical strength. It can also build focus, resilience and self-belief.
Our adult activities include four-week kickboxing courses, delivered in a supportive environment. Sessions can help participants improve fitness, coordination and confidence while learning practical techniques.
For people aged over 40, beginning or returning to exercise can feel uncertain. That is understandable. Bodies and energy levels change over time, and people may have different levels of mobility or previous injuries.
The right approach is steady progress:
- Begin with realistic goals.
- Tell the instructor if you have concerns.
- Work at a suitable pace.
- Focus on consistency rather than perfection.
- Celebrate small improvements.
Fitness for over-40s should be positive and adaptable. It should help you feel stronger in everyday life, whether your goal is improved mobility, better stamina, greater confidence or simply enjoying time with other people.

Step 3: Create safer spaces for vulnerable people
Everyone should be able to take part in activity without feeling judged, pressured or unsafe.
This is especially important for people who have experienced domestic violence, abuse, isolation or a loss of confidence. A supportive class can provide routine and connection, but safety must always come first.
Our self-defence workshops focus on awareness, confidence and practical skills. They are not about encouraging confrontation. They are about helping people understand boundaries, recognise risk and feel more prepared.
We also aim to make our sessions welcoming for people who may feel nervous about joining a group. You can contact us before booking if you have questions about the venue, the session or what to expect.
If you are recovering from domestic violence, you do not have to manage everything alone. Support may include talking to a trusted person, contacting a specialist service or asking for help with practical next steps. Taking part in an activity should always be your choice and should happen at a pace that feels right for you.
For immediate danger, call 999. If you cannot speak on a mobile call, press 55 when prompted to use the Silent Solution.

Step 4: Explore women’s activities in Huddersfield
Our women’s activities provide opportunities to improve fitness, confidence and personal safety in a welcoming setting.
Women’s kickboxing sessions at WomenCentre Huddersfield run as regular four-week courses. These sessions combine physical activity with confidence-building and practical skills. They are suitable for people who are new to kickboxing as well as those who want to develop existing ability.
The aim is not to compete with others. The aim is to learn, move and grow in a supportive group.
WomenCentre sessions can be particularly valuable for people who want activity in a women-focused environment. They may also support people who are rebuilding confidence after difficult experiences.
Please check the current timetable and availability before attending.

Step 5: Book before you arrive
All classes must be booked at least one day, or 24 hours, in advance through our booking app.
Please do not turn up without a confirmed booking. We cannot guarantee entry to anyone who arrives without a booking, even if the session appears to have space.
Booking in advance helps us to:
- Manage class numbers safely.
- Prepare instructors and equipment.
- Offer a better experience for everyone.
- Support people who may need additional information.
- Keep the timetable accurate.
The booking app is also the best place to check available sessions, course dates and any changes.
If you are unsure which activity is right for you, contact New Direction Services on 01484 218853 before booking.
Step 6: Consider pay-weekly community club access
Not everyone can commit to a long membership or a full programme. That is why flexible access matters.
Our pay-weekly community club access can help people take part without making a longer commitment than they can manage. This may suit people with changing work patterns, caring responsibilities, health needs or limited budgets.
Weekly access can also be a useful first step. You can try a session, understand the atmosphere and decide what feels suitable before planning further activity.
Availability and payment options can change, so please check the booking app or contact us for current details.
Step 7: Keep children and young people active during the holidays
Our holiday clubs give children and young people opportunities to stay active, learn and make friends during school breaks.
We offer martial arts, fitness, dance and music activities for young people. These sessions can support discipline, confidence, teamwork and physical wellbeing in a positive environment.
We have delivered HAF Holiday Clubs since the programme began, helping children and families access enriching activities. Some funded places may depend on eligibility and availability, so families should check the latest information before booking.
Community activity is not only about exercise. It is also about belonging, creativity and giving young people the confidence to try something new.

A positive next step for Huddersfield
Support and fitness can look different for every person. It might be a weekly kickboxing course, a self-defence workshop, a holiday club or simply a first conversation about what is available.
The key is to choose one manageable step.
Could you benefit from more movement in your week? Would a welcoming group help you feel less isolated? Is there someone in your family who would enjoy a structured activity?
New Direction Services CIC is here to support people across Huddersfield, Kirklees and West Yorkshire. Our aim is simple: to help people build strength, resilience, confidence and connection through accessible community activities.
