In Huddersfield, finding the right activity can be about more than exercise. It can mean meeting people, building a routine, practising new skills or having a safe and welcoming place to spend time. Across Kirklees and West Yorkshire, there are different ways to take a first step, at a pace that feels right for you.

New Direction Services CIC offers community activities for people with varied backgrounds and abilities. Here are six things local residents may find useful when considering support and fitness.

1. Feeling safe matters

Joining a new group can take courage, especially if you have had difficult experiences or need extra support. It is reasonable to ask questions before attending. You might want to check what the session involves, where it takes place, what to bring and whether adjustments can be made.

Choose an activity where your boundaries are respected. You can take a break, ask for help or decide that a class is not right for you. If it helps, plan your journey and tell someone you trust where you are going. These are practical ways to feel more prepared, not guarantees of safety.

Our self-defence workshops introduce practical skills in a structured setting. Training may help participants practise awareness and confidence, but it cannot remove risk or replace a specialist safety plan. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999.

2. Book through the app, at least one full day ahead

To check sessions and reserve a place, use the New Direction Services booking app. Please book at least 24 hours in advance: one full day before the activity. This gives the team time to prepare and helps them plan for participants.

Check the activity, date and time carefully, and look for confirmation before travelling. If you cannot see a suitable session, or you are unsure whether your booking is complete, call 01484 218853. Timetables and places can change, so the app is the best place to check current arrangements.

3. Support after domestic violence

There is no single route through life after domestic violence. People may need practical help, specialist advice, time to rebuild confidence or a supportive way to reconnect with others. An activity can be one small part of that picture, if and when it feels suitable.

New Direction’s women’s activities include kickboxing and self-defence options. Some sessions are delivered in partnership with WomenCentre. Ask about the current arrangements before attending, as eligibility, dates and availability may vary.

Most importantly, exercise and group activities do not replace specialist domestic-abuse support, counselling, medical care or emergency help. Kirklees residents can contact Kirklees Domestic Abuse Specialist Services (KDASS) for specialist support. If you are in immediate danger, call 999. 4. Activity and mental wellbeing

When daily life feels difficult, adding a new commitment may not be the right first step. But for some people, gentle movement or a regular class can provide structure and a chance to connect with others. A short walk, stretching or a beginner-friendly activity may be enough to start with.

There is no need to measure progress against anyone else. Think about what feels manageable: a quieter class, a social activity or something more energetic. If you have health concerns or an injury, speak to a healthcare professional about what may be appropriate for you.

5. Fitness after 40 can start at any level

If you are over 40 and thinking about becoming more active, there is no need to begin with an intense workout. You might choose dance, martial arts, walking or another form of movement that interests you. Start at a comfortable level and build gradually, giving yourself time to learn and adjust.

Our adult activities include options such as dance and kickboxing. Check the booking app for current sessions, details and availability. If you are returning after a long break or have a health concern, ask a healthcare professional for advice and tell the instructor if you need an adjustment.

6. Ask about pay-weekly community club access

A weekly option may feel more manageable if you want to try an activity without making a longer commitment. New Direction Services offers pay-per-lesson community access for a range of sessions. Which activities are included, and the current cost and availability, can vary.

Check the booking app or call 01484 218853 to ask what arrangements apply before booking. Avoid relying on old prices or timetables; confirm the current details directly with the team. A single session can be a useful way to see whether a group and activity feel right for you.

Activities for children and families

Community activity can bring families together, too. New Direction Services runs HAF Holiday Clubs alongside holiday activities such as dance, music, martial arts and fitness. Check the page for current programme details and any eligibility requirements. Funded places and availability may vary, so contact the team to confirm what is currently offered.
