The clocks are about to change, the evenings are getting darker, and October half-term is nearly here in Huddersfield. As autumn routines shift, a welcoming indoor activity can be a simple way to keep moving, meet people and feel part of the community.
At New Direction Services CIC, we offer activities for people across Huddersfield, Kirklees and West Yorkshire. You do not need to be at a particular fitness level or have everything figured out before you come along. You can start by finding out what is available and choosing something that feels right for you.
A friendly session as the evenings get darker
The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, and Kirklees schools are due to break for half-term from Monday 26 October to Friday 30 October. School dates can vary, so check with your own school if you are unsure.
With night arriving earlier, an indoor community session can offer a warm place to move, practise a new skill or spend time with others. Our activities include options such as dance, martial arts, fitness and self-defence. You can explore the current range on our services page.
If you would like to join a session over the coming weeks, check the booking app early. Please book at least one full day (24 hours) in advance. The app is the best place to check current listings, dates and availability. If you have a question about a booking, call us on 01484 218853.

Planning something for half-term
School holidays can be a good chance for young people to try an activity, build confidence and enjoy a change of routine. Our holiday clubs include dance and music, as well as martial arts and fitness activities. Check the dance holiday club page for details about that programme.
We have delivered HAF holiday clubs for families, and funded places may be available for eligible children. Places, eligibility, dates and activities can change, so please check the current information before making plans. Do not assume a place is confirmed until you have received the relevant booking confirmation. If you are unsure which registration route to use, contact us on 01484 218853.
Booking early is useful, particularly when families are organising the week around childcare, work and travel. Check the current details on our website and app, and remember that sessions booked through the app must be reserved at least 24 hours ahead.
Making the journey to an evening class
A class can be a positive part of the evening, and it is sensible to give some thought to getting there and home again. As the nights draw in, you might check your route in advance, allow extra time, choose well-lit streets where possible and make sure your phone is charged. If it feels helpful and safe for you, let someone you trust know your plans or arrange to travel with another person.
These are practical ways to plan, not guarantees of safety. Everyone’s circumstances are different, so choose what feels appropriate for you. Our self-defence workshops provide structured sessions to practise awareness and skills, but no class can remove risk or replace a specialist safety plan. If you or another person is in immediate danger, call 999.
A gentle reminder for women seeking support
For women and teenage girls, a class can be a way to build strength, confidence and connection at a pace that feels manageable. Our women’s activities include kickboxing and self-defence options, and we run activities at WomenCentre Huddersfield. Dates and availability can change, so check before attending.
If you have experienced domestic abuse, you deserve support that meets your needs. Exercise and community activities may be one part of reconnecting with others, if and when you want that, but they do not replace specialist domestic-abuse support, counselling or other professional care. Kirklees Domestic Abuse Support Services (KDASS) can be contacted through its support page. For more information, you can also read Looking For Domestic Violence Support? Here Are 10 Things You Should Know.

Small movements can still matter
When the days feel busy or your energy is low, it may help to start gently. A short walk, a few stretches or a low-pressure group activity can give some structure to the week and an opportunity to connect. There is no need to match anyone else’s pace; the useful step is one that feels manageable for you.
Community activity may support wellbeing, but it is not a substitute for mental health treatment or advice from a healthcare professional. If you are experiencing ongoing difficulties, consider speaking with a GP or an appropriate support service. You can read more in Can Local Community Activities Really Help You Heal? Find Out Here.
Getting active after 40
It is never too late to explore movement that suits you. If you are over 40, returning to activity after a break, or simply trying something new, you can start at a comfortable level and build gradually. Our adult activities include options such as kickboxing and dance. Check current session information before booking, and speak to a healthcare professional if you have a health concern or are unsure what level of activity is right for you.

Flexible ways to take part
We know that committing to a long-term membership or a fixed routine does not suit everyone. Pay-weekly community club access may offer a more flexible way to try activities. The sessions included, prices and availability can change, so please check the latest details through the booking app or call 01484 218853 before making plans.
As half-term approaches, take a moment to consider what would work for you or your family: a new class, a holiday activity, or simply asking a question about what is available. We are here to help people across Huddersfield, Kirklees and West Yorkshire find a welcoming way to get more active.
