A fresh start for autumn

September is nearly over. School routines are back, evenings are becoming darker and many of us are trying to find a better rhythm.

Could this be the right time to take one small step for your health, safety or confidence?

Across Huddersfield, Kirklees and West Yorkshire, local people are looking for simple ways to stay active, meet others and feel supported. At New Direction Services CIC, we believe community activities should feel welcoming, affordable and achievable.

Our classes and support are designed for people from all walks of life. Whether you want to build fitness, learn self-defence, support your mental health or help your child enjoy an active holiday, you can find a place in our community.

Here are six helpful ways to make the most of local support this autumn.

1. Staying safe matters

Being active is not only about fitness. It can also help us build confidence, awareness and crucial safety skills.

For vulnerable people, feeling safe in a new setting is especially important. That is why a supportive environment matters. Our activities are delivered in a friendly community setting, with instructors who understand that people have different experiences, needs and confidence levels.

Our women’s activities include self-defence, kickboxing and confidence-building sessions. These classes focus on practical skills, strength and empowerment. You do not need to be experienced. You can start at a pace that feels right for you.

Self-defence is not about looking for conflict. It is about awareness, boundaries, confidence and knowing what options may be available in an unsafe situation.

We can also help groups, schools and organisations explore self-defence workshops and community safety activities.

If you are supporting someone who may be vulnerable, ask yourself:

  • Do they know where to get help?
  • Do they have someone they trust?
  • Would a friendly group activity help them feel less isolated?
  • Is there a safe way for them to build confidence?

Small steps can make a real difference.

2. Book your class before you arrive

As autumn routines become busier, planning ahead can help everyone enjoy their session.

All classes must be booked through our booking app at least 24 hours in advance. Please do not turn up without a confirmed booking.

This helps us prepare the right space, welcome participants properly and keep sessions safe. It also means you can check the class details before travelling.

A simple booking routine is:

  1. Choose the activity you are interested in.
  2. Open the booking app.
  3. Select the date and time.
  4. Complete your booking at least 24 hours before the session.
  5. Wait for your confirmation before attending.

This applies whether you are booking martial arts, dance, fitness or another community activity.

If you are unsure which class is suitable, contact us on 01484 218853 before booking. We will do our best to point you in the right direction.

Planning ahead is a small action, but it supports a better experience for everyone.

3. Support after domestic violence

Leaving an abusive relationship or living through domestic violence can affect every part of life. Confidence, sleep, mental health, finances and physical wellbeing may all be affected.

Recovery does not happen overnight. It can take time to feel safe, make decisions and trust people again. Support after domestic violence should be practical, respectful and led by the person receiving it.

Physical activity can be one part of a wider recovery plan. A gentle class, a women-only activity or a community group may help someone reconnect with their body and rebuild confidence. It is always important to choose an activity that feels safe and never to feel pressured to take part.

Our Looking For Domestic Violence Support article includes further information and encouragement for anyone seeking help.

Important safety information

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999.

If you are unable to speak on a mobile phone, stay on the line and press 55 when prompted. This is known as the Silent Solution.

For confidential national support, contact the National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000 247.

For local support in Kirklees, contact the Pennine Domestic Abuse Partnership on 0800 052 7222.

You can also contact New Direction Services CIC on 01484 218853 to ask about our community activities and available support. We are not an emergency service, but we may be able to help you understand what local activity options are available.

You do not have to explain everything at once. Asking one question is enough to begin.

4. Mental health and movement

When life feels difficult, activity may seem like another task on a long list. However, movement does not need to mean an intense workout.

A short walk, a dance session, a few gentle exercises or a regular class can support mood, confidence and routine. The social side can be just as important as the physical side. Seeing familiar faces and having somewhere to go can reduce isolation.

Our adult activities include fitness-based sessions, dance and kickboxing. These activities can help you learn a new skill while becoming more active.

You can also read:

Activity is not a replacement for professional mental health care. If you are struggling, speak with your GP or a qualified support service. Movement can sit alongside that support and help create a stronger daily routine.

Start small. Choose something you may enjoy. Give yourself permission to build slowly.

5. Fitness for people over 40

Fitness does not have an age limit. People over 40 may be balancing work, family life, caring responsibilities or changes in health. That can make it harder to find time for themselves.

The answer is not to try to do everything at once. A regular, manageable activity is often more useful than an ambitious plan that becomes difficult to maintain.

Dance, martial arts, kickboxing and other active sessions can support:

  • Strength and balance
  • Coordination
  • Mobility
  • Confidence
  • Energy
  • Social connection
  • A sense of achievement

You do not need to be at a particular fitness level to begin. You can ask about the pace, the activities involved and any adjustments that may be possible.

We also run activities for the over-50s, with a focus on connection, friendship and staying engaged in the local community. These may also be helpful for people in their 40s who want to build a routine before later-life health becomes a concern.

6. Pay-weekly community club access

Cost can be a barrier when you are trying something new. A long membership or large upfront payment may not suit every household.

Our community access model is designed to make activities easier to try. Pay-weekly community club access can help you take part regularly while keeping your options flexible.

We offer a range of low-cost community sessions, including dance, martial arts and fitness activities. Visit our services page to explore what is available, then use the booking app to check sessions and make a confirmed booking.

If you are not sure which option is right for you, call 01484 218853. We can explain the current arrangements and help you plan your first visit.

Regular activity does not need to be expensive. It needs to be welcoming, realistic and consistent.

Support for children and families

The return to routine is also a good time to think about school holidays and future activities for children.

Our holiday clubs and HAF activities offer active and creative opportunities for young people. Activities include martial arts, fitness, dance and music. Funded places may be limited and eligibility rules can apply, so please check the details before booking.

Holiday clubs can help children stay active, learn new skills and build friendships during school breaks. They can also give families a reliable source of support when normal school routines are not in place.

For one person, it may mean booking a first class. For another, it may mean asking for domestic abuse support, joining a women’s session or finding an activity for an older family member.
