Looking for a friendly way to get active, feel supported or meet people locally? In Huddersfield and across Kirklees, a community class can be a simple first step towards building confidence, strength and a regular routine.
At New Direction Services CIC, we help vulnerable people get more active. Our activities welcome people from different backgrounds and with different abilities. Here are six ways to find support and fitness in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
Step 1: Book your class through the app
The first step is to check the timetable and book your place through our online booking app. Please book at least 24 hours in advance. We need this notice to prepare the session, organise instructors and equipment, and support safe group sizes.
Booking ahead also means you can check the details before you set off. Select the class, check the date and time, and look out for confirmation. Please do not travel to a class without a confirmed booking. If you are unsure whether your booking has gone through, call us on 01484 218853.

Step 2: Make safety part of getting active
Everyone deserves to feel comfortable when joining an activity. If you feel nervous about a new venue or group, it may help to plan your journey, ask questions before attending or bring someone you trust if that is possible.
A welcoming class should respect your boundaries. You can ask about the space, the activity and any adjustments you may need. You do not have to share personal details or take part in something that does not feel right for you.
Our self-defence workshops offer a chance to learn practical skills in a group setting. Self-defence training can support awareness and confidence, but it is not a substitute for specialist safety planning or domestic abuse support.
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999. If you cannot speak on a mobile, listen to the operator’s instructions and press 55 when prompted to use the Silent Solution.
Step 3: Find support after domestic violence
Life after domestic violence can bring many different feelings and practical challenges. There is no set timetable for recovery, and there is no single right way to rebuild confidence. Specialist advice, a supportive activity or simply having a regular place to go may each play a part.
Our women’s activities include opportunities to build fitness, learn skills and connect with others. Women’s kickboxing runs as regular four-week courses at WomenCentre Huddersfield. Courses can be a way to try something new at a manageable pace. Check current availability and any attendance arrangements with us before booking.
Community activity can complement specialist support, but it does not replace it. For confidential advice, contact the National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000 247. In Kirklees, you can also call Pennine Domestic Abuse Partnership on 0800 052 7222. For more information, read Looking For Domestic Violence Support? Here Are 10 Things You Should Know.

Step 4: Use movement to support your wellbeing
Physical activity is not a cure for mental health difficulties, but it can be one helpful part of looking after yourself. A short walk, gentle stretching or a beginner-friendly class can add movement and routine to the week. Group activities can also offer the chance to feel connected to other people.
Start with something that feels realistic. You might prefer a quieter activity, a dance session or a class with an instructor. There is no need to compare yourself with anyone else; choosing a pace you can keep up is a strong start.

Step 5: Find fitness that works for you after 40
It is never too late to try an activity or return to exercise. Fitness after 40 does not have to mean intense workouts. Regular movement that suits your body can help you work on strength, balance, flexibility and stamina.
Choose an activity you enjoy, start at a comfortable level and build gradually. If you have an injury or health concern, speak with a healthcare professional before starting, and let the instructor know if you need any adjustments.
Our adult activities include options such as kickboxing and dance. Check the booking app for current sessions and times. For more ideas, read The Over-40’s Guide to Getting Fit and Active in Huddersfield.
Step 6: Ask about pay-weekly community club access
Starting something new can feel easier when you can take it one week at a time. Pay-weekly community club access may suit people who want to try an activity without committing to a longer plan.
Ask us which sessions currently offer pay-weekly access, what they cost and whether you need to meet any requirements. Options and availability can change, so it is best to check before you book. You can call 01484 218853 or view activities through the booking app.
A small step still matters. Turning up once, meeting someone new or finding a class you enjoy can help you build a routine that feels right for you.
HAF Holiday Clubs and family activities
Support and fitness can be for the whole family, too. Our HAF Holiday Clubs offer activities for young people, including dance and music, and martial arts and fitness. It is a chance for children to be active, try new skills and spend time with others during the holidays.
Some funded places may be available for eligible families, subject to current programme rules and availability. Check the holiday-club information or contact us to ask what is running.
