November is arriving, and thinking ahead about safety is an act of self-care, not a reason to live in fear.

Across Huddersfield, Kirklees and West Yorkshire, the clocks have changed and daylight fades earlier. Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October, Bonfire Night is approaching around 5 November, and Remembrance events take place later in the month. Colder weather and busier streets can make everyday journeys feel different, especially for people who already have concerns about travelling or being in public spaces.

A few simple preparations can help us feel more settled. Planning ahead is not about avoiding life; it is about making room to take part with greater confidence.

Why November safety matters

The darker evenings can mean travelling to or from an activity after sunset. Familiar routes may feel less comfortable when visibility is low, while the town centre and nearby roads may be busier around Bonfire Night week.

Fireworks can also be difficult for people who have experienced trauma. Sudden bangs and flashes may feel distressing or unsettling. Everyone’s experience is different, and there is no need to explain or justify what feels difficult.

Safety includes the journey, the activity and the way we feel while we are there. A little preparation can help us decide what suits us best.

Step by step: simple habits for safer journeys

There is no perfect plan for every person or every journey. Choose the steps that feel practical for you:

  1. Check your route before you leave. If possible, plan it in daylight first. Choose familiar, well-lit streets and check for changes before setting out.
  2. Tell someone you trust. Let them know where you are going and when you expect to be back. Agree how you will check in if that would help.
  3. Book your place in advance. A booking lets the venue know to expect you and helps our team know who is coming. Use the booking app or call 01484 218853.
  4. Arrange your travel home. Think about your return journey before you go, so you are not left waiting around after dark.
  5. Take a charged phone. Keep it somewhere you can reach easily. A small torch or reflective item may also be useful on a darker journey.
  6. Trust your instincts. If a route, situation or venue does not feel right, you can change your plans or leave. You do not owe anyone an explanation.

These are everyday precautions, not guarantees. The aim is to give ourselves choices and a little more peace of mind.

Fireworks season: choose what feels manageable

For some people, fireworks are enjoyable; for others, loud and unexpected noise can be distressing. If the noise is a trigger, you might prefer to plan around busy evenings or choose a quieter activity indoors. An evening session in a warm, familiar space may feel calmer than being outside near a display. A daytime session may suit you better still.

There is no need to push yourself to attend at a time that feels uncomfortable. If you are considering an activity, check current dates, times, prices and availability on the booking app or call 01484 218853. We cannot promise particular sessions or places, so please check before travelling.

Feeling safe in the room matters too

If you are recovering from domestic abuse, safety is not just about getting to a venue. It is also about feeling respected and comfortable once you arrive. You deserve to ask questions, take things at your own pace and decide what feels right for you.

Information about New Direction Services sessions at WomenCentre Huddersfield

Our women’s activities include sessions such as kickboxing at WomenCentre Huddersfield. Our community activities offer other ways to get active and connect with people. The purpose is to take part in a supportive environment, not to expect anyone to share personal experiences or move faster than they feel ready to.

Activity can be one positive part of rebuilding routine, confidence and connection. It is not a replacement for specialist domestic abuse support. For help in Kirklees, contact Kirklees Domestic Abuse Specialist Services (KDASS). You can also read Looking For Domestic Violence Support? Here Are 10 Things You Should Know. If you are unsure whether a session is suitable, you can contact us before booking. You do not need to share more than you are comfortable sharing.

Booking ahead is part of planning safely

All sessions must be booked at least one full day (24 hours) in advance. Book through the New Direction Services booking app or call 01484 218853.

Booking ahead gives our team time to prepare and lets us know who is expected. It also gives you an opportunity to check the venue and session details, think through your journey and ask any questions before leaving home.

Please check the app or call us for current dates, times, prices and availability. These can change, and we cannot promise specific sessions or free places. If you are looking for an activity for a child during a school holiday, our HAF Holiday Clubs are separate from adult sessions; check the current holiday programme for dates and eligibility.

Take one small safe step this November

Staying safe does not mean stopping the things that matter to us. It means finding ways to take part that respect our needs, boundaries and circumstances. Across Huddersfield, Kirklees and West Yorkshire, one small step might be checking a route, asking a question, booking a suitable activity or letting someone know your plans.

Our aim is for people to feel safe, seen and moving, at a pace that works for them. Explore our services and adult activities, or read more in our related Support and Fitness for the Huddersfield Community article.
