As the evenings become darker and routines change, what is one small step you could take for your health, safety or confidence?

Across Huddersfield, Kirklees and West Yorkshire, staying connected can help us feel stronger and more supported. At New Direction Services CIC, we provide welcoming community activities, fitness sessions and support for people from all walks of life.

Here are six simple ways to stay well and connected this autumn.

Step 1: Put safety first

Autumn can bring darker journeys, colder weather and changes to daily routines. For vulnerable people, these changes may make everyday activities feel more difficult. A small amount of planning can help.

Before leaving home, consider:

  • Telling someone where you are going.
  • Keeping your phone charged.
  • Choosing well-lit routes.
  • Arranging safe transport home.
  • Checking in with a trusted person after a class or activity.
  • Asking for support if you feel unsure.

Our community activities are designed to be friendly and inclusive. We aim to provide help for vulnerable people in a safe and respectful environment.

You do not have to manage everything alone. Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. If you are supporting someone who may be vulnerable, a simple message or invitation can make a real difference.

Step 2: Book your class in advance

When routines are busy, booking an activity can be a helpful commitment. It gives you something positive to look forward to and helps us prepare properly for each session.

All classes must be booked at least 24 hours in advance through our booking app. This means bookings must be made at least one day before the lesson.

Please do not turn up without a confirmed booking. A class may be full, changed or unavailable without advance notice. Checking your confirmation before travelling helps avoid disappointment.

Our sessions include adult fitness, martial arts, self-defence, dance and other community activities. If you are not sure which class is right for you, call us on 01484 218853.

One small step could be opening the booking app today and choosing a session that suits your routine.

Step 3: Find support after domestic violence

Recovering after domestic violence takes time. People who have experienced domestic abuse may need support with confidence, anxiety, isolation and physical wellbeing. Gentle activity can help create structure, connection and a sense of progress.

Our women’s activities include supportive options for women who want to build strength and confidence. Women’s kickboxing at WomenCentre Huddersfield runs as regular four-week courses. These sessions can provide a welcoming space to learn, move and connect with others.

Our self-defence workshops can also help participants develop awareness, practical skills and confidence. However, activity is not a replacement for specialist domestic abuse support, counselling or medical care. It should sit alongside the professional help that each person needs.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence:

  • Call 999 if there is immediate danger.
  • On a mobile call, press 55 when prompted if you cannot speak.
  • Contact the National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000 247.
  • Contact the Pennine Domestic Abuse Partnership in Kirklees on 0800 052 7222.

Step 4: Support your mental health through activity

Mental health and physical activity are closely connected. Movement cannot solve every problem, but it can support a healthier routine, better sleep and improved confidence. It can also give us a reason to leave the house and meet people.

Start with something manageable:

  • Take a short walk.
  • Join a gentle class.
  • Try music, dance or creative activity.
  • Attend with a friend or support worker.
  • Set one realistic goal for the week.

There is no need to aim for perfection. Five minutes can be a beginning. One class can be a beginning. Speaking to someone can be a beginning.

Our adult activities are designed to support fitness, confidence and connection. They can be suitable for people who are new to exercise or returning after a difficult period.

Step 5: Build strength and confidence after 40

Fitness is for every age. After 40, regular movement can support strength, balance, mobility and energy. It can also be a positive way to meet people and create a steady weekly routine.

You do not need to be highly experienced or extremely fit to begin. A supportive class should allow you to work at your own pace. Tell the instructor if you have an injury, health condition or concern before taking part.

Our adult sessions can include kickboxing, martial arts and other activities that develop:

  • Strength and coordination.
  • Stamina and mobility.
  • Focus and discipline.
  • Confidence and resilience.
  • Social connection.

You can explore our adult activities in Huddersfield or contact us on 01484 218853 to ask about suitable options.

The most important step is not doing the most. It is finding something you can return to.

Step 6: Consider pay-weekly community club access

Cost can affect whether people feel able to join regular activities. Pay-weekly community club access can provide a more manageable way to take part, rather than paying for a longer period all at once.

This may be helpful for people balancing household bills, caring responsibilities or changing work patterns. It can also help families and vulnerable adults keep a regular connection with the community.

Availability and arrangements may vary, so please contact us to discuss current options. Our aim is to make getting more active as accessible and welcoming as possible.

A weekly session can become more than exercise. It can become a routine, a friendly face, a chance to build confidence and a reminder that you belong.

HAF Holiday Clubs and family activities

Our HAF Holiday Clubs help children and young people stay active, creative and connected during school holidays.

Activities may include dance, music, martial arts, games and fitness. These sessions support confidence, teamwork and new skills in a positive environment. Funded places may be available for eligible families, subject to programme rules and availability.

HAF holiday clubs also provide valuable support services for families. They can give children a safe place to take part in activities while helping parents and carers manage holiday routines.

Families can also explore our wider children’s activities and community services to find suitable opportunities throughout the year.

Take one small step this autumn

Darker evenings and changing routines can make it tempting to withdraw. This autumn, we can choose one small step towards safety, strength and connection.

Book a class, contact a support service, invite someone to join you or ask a question about our community activities. Every positive step matters.
