Staying active should fit around real life, including real-life budgets. As Halloween arrives this Saturday and the countdown to Christmas begins, a week-by-week way to join community activities may feel more manageable than signing up to a long-term gym membership.

At New Direction Services CIC, we support people in Huddersfield and across Kirklees to get more active through inclusive, community-based sessions. Pay-weekly access can help you take part without making a bigger commitment than feels right for you.

What does pay-weekly access mean?

Pay-weekly, pay-as-you-go or pay-per-session access generally means you choose an activity and book a place for a particular session, rather than paying for an ongoing membership. You decide when to take part and can plan one week at a time.

The exact arrangements can differ between activities. Check the current price, dates, availability and booking details before you make plans. Our services page gives an overview of what we offer, and our booking app shows the latest information available.

Paying week by week may suit people whose income or commitments change. It can also help if you are unsure what routine will work for you, or if a regular monthly payment would feel difficult to manage.

Why flexibility can matter in the run-up to Christmas

Halloween is this Saturday, followed by November and the busy run-up to Christmas. For many households, this is a season of extra costs: food, travel, gifts, family plans and winter bills. It can also be harder to get moving when evenings are darker and the weather is colder.

That does not mean you have to give up on being active. A flexible option can make it easier to choose a session when it fits your budget and schedule. It may help you avoid paying for weeks when you cannot attend.

It is worth comparing the full cost and terms before choosing any activity. A gym membership may offer regular access or facilities, but some plans involve a fixed monthly payment or a longer commitment. Community pay-weekly access is different: you typically book individual sessions, rather than paying for a membership. Which option suits you depends on your plans, budget and how often you want to attend.

What might a session include?

Community activities can bring more than a chance to move. Depending on the session, you may take part in a guided activity, learn a skill and meet people in a supportive setting.

New Direction Services runs activities including dance, martial arts, self-defence and women’s sessions. The women’s activities page includes information about kickboxing and sessions at WomenCentre Huddersfield. You can also find out about our self-defence workshops.

What is included, and who a session is for, can vary. Please check the current listing or contact us before booking if you have questions about what to expect, accessibility or whether a session feels suitable for you.

Step by step: making a weekly plan

1. Choose an amount you can genuinely afford.
Look at your usual weekly costs first. Decide what, if anything, you can put towards an activity without putting pressure on essentials such as food, housing, energy or travel.

2. Start small.
One session a week can be a reasonable place to begin. You do not need to commit to a full timetable or set a big fitness goal. A small, manageable step can help you see whether the activity suits you.

3. Treat it like any other weekly cost.
If you decide to book, include the session in your weekly spending plan. That can help you understand what the cost means for the rest of your budget.

4. Review as you go.
Your circumstances can change. You can check the next week’s options and decide whether booking still works for you. Pay-weekly access is intended to offer flexibility, but check the current booking and payment terms for the activity you choose.

If even one session feels too much right now, please do not feel you have to stretch your budget. Get in touch and we can talk through the information and options available. We cannot promise free places or discounts; prices and arrangements can change, so please ask us about current details.

Booking: check first, then reserve

You can view available sessions through the New Direction Services booking app. Bookings must be made at least one full day (24 hours) in advance. Please do not assume a session is available until you have checked the app or spoken with us.

Prices, dates and availability can change. Check the app or phone us on 01484 218853 for the latest details before making plans. If you are unsure which activity to look at, or need help with booking, contact us and we will do our best to guide you.

Finding an activity that feels right

If you are over 40, or returning to movement after a break, you can start at your own pace. Our over-40s guide to getting active in Huddersfield and adult activities page may help you explore what is available.

We also run HAF holiday clubs for families during school breaks. These are separate from adult community sessions, and details such as dates, places and eligibility should be checked for each holiday period.

For some people, gentle activity can support wellbeing and create an opportunity to connect with others. It is not a substitute for mental health treatment or professional advice. You can read more in our article, Can local community activities really help you heal?.

Activity is also not a replacement for specialist domestic abuse support. If you or someone you know needs support, contact Kirklees Domestic Abuse Services (KDASS) or read our guide to finding domestic violence support. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 999.

A small step, on your terms

Pay-weekly access is one way to make community activity easier to plan around a changing budget. You can start with one session, check the cost before booking and decide week by week what works for you.

If you live in Huddersfield, Kirklees or elsewhere in West Yorkshire and want to find out more, visit our services page, check the booking app or call 01484 218853. We are happy to talk through current options, without pressure to commit to more than you can manage.
