The first step is often the hardest: deciding to try a class when you are not sure what to expect. If you have been thinking about getting more active in Huddersfield, this simple guide can help you take that step at your own pace.
Late October can be a good moment to begin something new and structured. The clocks go back this weekend, darker evenings are settling in, and Bonfire Night week is approaching across Kirklees. A regular activity can give the week a positive focus, as well as a chance to build strength, confidence and connection with other people.
At New Direction Services CIC, our community sessions are designed to be welcoming to people with different levels of experience. Here is how to get started.
Step 1, Decide what you would like to try
You do not need to choose the “perfect” activity. Start by thinking about what sounds enjoyable, useful or simply interesting to you.
Our activities include dance, martial arts, fitness, self-defence and kickboxing. Dance may appeal if you would like to move to music and practise coordination. Martial arts and kickboxing offer a way to develop fitness and learn new skills. Self-defence workshops focus on awareness and practical techniques in a supportive setting.
You can explore the options on our services page. If you are unsure which session might suit you, contact us and ask. It is helpful to tell us about any questions, access needs or concerns before you book, so we can point you towards the most suitable option.
A first session is not a test. You do not need to arrive already fit, confident or experienced. You are there to try something and see how it feels.
Step 2, Book your place
Once you have found a session that interests you, check the live New Direction Services booking app. Review the activity details, venue, time and availability before confirming your booking.
Please book at least one full day (24 hours) in advance. This gives the team time to prepare for the session and helps us plan for everyone attending. Do not assume there is space without checking the current booking information.
If you have a question about booking, call us on 01484 218853. You can also contact us if you are uncertain about which listing to choose or what to expect. Prices, dates and availability can change, so please check the app or phone us for the latest details.

Step 3: Know what to bring and what to expect
Getting ready for your first class can be straightforward. Wear comfortable clothes that let you move easily and bring water. You usually do not need special clothing or equipment to begin, but check the session details in case they say otherwise.
Aim to arrive a little early. That gives you time to find the room, settle in and introduce yourself to the instructor. Let them know it is your first time. They can explain how the session works and help you understand what to do.
You do not have to keep up with anyone else. Take breaks when you need them, listen to your body and ask questions if something is unclear. If you have an injury, health condition or other concern about taking part, contact us beforehand and speak to the instructor before the activity begins.
The first session is about getting familiar with the space and trying the activity. You can take away what you learn and decide afterwards whether you would like to return.
Step 4, Plan your journey for darker evenings
As the clocks go back, it will get dark earlier. A little planning can make travelling to a class feel more manageable. Before you leave:
- Check the route and venue details in advance, and allow extra time.
- Where possible, choose familiar, well-lit streets.
- Keep your phone charged and make sure you know how you will get home.
- If it helps you feel more comfortable, travel with someone or arrange to meet them nearby.
These are practical suggestions, not guarantees of safety. Choose the arrangements that feel right for your circumstances, and adjust your plans if anything changes. If there is an emergency, call 999.
Our self-defence workshops offer another way to learn about awareness and practical skills in a structured setting. They are not a guarantee of safety, but they may be an option if you would like to explore self-defence with an instructor.
Step 5, Build a habit gently
You do not need to overhaul your routine to make a start. One session a week can be a realistic first goal. Try choosing a day that works around your other commitments, then give yourself time to see how the activity fits into your life.
If you enjoy the class, repeating it can help you become more familiar with the routine and develop confidence over time. If it is not quite right for you, that is useful information too. You can ask about another activity or take a pause. Progress is not always a straight line; returning when you are ready is part of building resilience.
Pay-weekly community club access may be a flexible option, without the need for a long-term commitment. The arrangements can vary, so please check current prices, dates and availability in the booking app or call 01484 218853 before making plans.

A note for women who have experienced domestic abuse
Our women’s activities include kickboxing and self-defence. We also run sessions at WomenCentre Huddersfield. For someone who has experienced domestic abuse, taking part in a welcoming activity may be a small, positive step towards reconnecting with movement, confidence or community. There is no pressure to attend, and you can ask questions before deciding what feels right.
Activity does not replace specialist domestic abuse support, counselling or professional care. If you are looking for specialist support in Kirklees, you can contact KDASS. Our article, “Looking For Domestic Violence Support? Here Are 10 Things You Should Know”, offers further information.
Gentle activity can support wellbeing for some people, but it is not a substitute for mental health treatment or professional advice. You may also find our article “Can Local Community Activities Really Help You Heal? Find Out Here” helpful.
It is never too late to begin
If you are over 40, new to exercise or returning after a long break, you are not behind. The right starting point is one that works for you now. Read The Over-40’s Guide to Getting Fit and Active in Huddersfield and explore our adult activities for more ideas.
You do not have to make a big commitment today. Choose one activity, check the booking details and ask any questions you need to ask. A first session is simply a first session: a chance to try something new, meet people and take a step towards greater strength and confidence in your community.
